Michael Swash MD FRCP FRCPath (dob 29 January 1939) Emeritus Professor of Neurology, St Bartholomew’s and The Royal London, Queen Mary School of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London, and Honorary Consultant Neurologist, The Royal London Hospital, London E1 Educated at Forest School, London, and qualified from The London Hospital Medical College in 1962. Exchange clinical student at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, USA, 1961. House Appointments in London and Bath, and experience in General Practice in Westbury, Wiltshire and Tottenham, London. Postgraduate training at University Hospitals of Cleveland (Case-Western Reserve University), Cleveland, Ohio, USA and Washington University, St Louis, Missouri, USA - 3 years postgraduate training in Neurology and Neurophysiology (1965-1968). Returned to The Royal London Hospital (1968) as Registrar in Neurology, and then as MRC Research Fellow in Neuropathology (1969-70), and as Senior Registrar in Neurology (1971). Appointed Consultant Neurologist at The Royal London Hospital, and Newham Health Authority in 1972. Honorary Neurologist at St Mark's Hospital, St Luke's Hospital for the Clergy, and at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Ohio, USA. Formerly Senior Lecturer in Neuropathology at The London Hospital Medical College. Member of various British, American, European and Australasian Neurological and other Medical Societies. Member of Neuroscience Board of the Medical Research Council (1987-1991). Research interests include clinical neurology, motor neuron disease, incontinence, neuromuscular disease and dementia. Current major research interests are Motor Neuron Disease, Neuromuscular Diseases, and Incontinence and Disorders of the Pelvic Floor. Visiting Lecturer/Professor at centres in Western and Eastern Europe, USA, Canada, Far East, South America and Australasia. Formerly Chairman Research Advisory Panel of Motor Neuron Disease Association. Member of Editorial Boards of various neurological and other journals.
